I had a genuine Cummins oil pan gasket on hand that I supplied them since I was going to do the job myself at some point but ran out of time ($280 for the gasket).ĭropped the truck off last Tuesday and picked it up today (11 days later). Ran the truck for 15-20 minutes in the parking lot after they cleaned everything and couldn’t see a leak, so I agreed to have them change the RTV pan gasket atrocity. I told them oil pans don’t just go bad without a reason and it’s leaking from above the rear main. I took the time to drive back down between work and talked to them in person for an hour. The leak slowed back down to a few drops every time I parked after changing the filter.ĭealer said they had a hard time getting it to leak and they think the oil pan needs replaced ($800). I replaced my CCV filer with genuine parts a week before (every 38,000 miles between intervals for me, even though Cummins suggests they are good to 75,000 miles). Every shop I talked to around town didn’t want to take the job or they were 3 months out. We are talking 3 drops of oil every time I parked at 120k miles, to eventually 3 teaspoons every 15 minutes by 140k miles.įinally, I got tired of putting a quart in every time I filled up and power washing oil off my 5,000 lb work trailer every week.īrought the truck into the dealer and said, “we need to drop the transmission and replace the camshaft seal at the back of the block, it’s leaking from up high.” I was quoted $1,200-1,700 and was happy to pay that for minimal downtime. The oil leak subsided afterwards, but slowly came back around 110k miles. The rear main seal likely failed because the first owner did not change the CCV filter, and the turbo pulled a vacuum on the crankcase sucking the seal in. They also RTV sealed the oil pan in hopes they would never see me again. Rear main seal replaced by the dealer at 85,000 under warranty. Truck has been leaking oil since 80,000 miles. Mainly just need to vent a little - one of those days. Interested in learning about alternative fuels?
